On August 28, 2023, the Newtown Nation is proud to participate in #Give828, a national day of giving dedicated to supporting Black-led and Black-benefitting organizations. This unique fundraising campaign takes place during Black Philanthropy Month and commemorates significant historical landmarks in the journey toward freedom for Black Americans. Remembering Historical Moments on August 28:
August 28 holds historical significance in the fight for equality and justice in America. Some of the critical events that took place on this day include:
- August 28, 1945: The integration of Major League Baseball began when President Branch Rickey met with Jackie Robinson, breaking the color barrier in the sport.
- August 28, 2005: Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, disproportionately affecting the city’s Black residents, highlighting the urgent need for support and resources in vulnerable communities.
